Presentation

The PIT-CNT is the biggest labor union in Uruguay. It is a big labor federation group that has smaller labor unions (of different kinds of working activities) inside it. PIT-CNT stands for Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores.

In 1964 various labor unions of Uruguay united to form the CNT - Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (National Convention of Workers) of leftist tendency. After the 1973 coup the group was proscripted.

During the following years it was forbidden to organize labor unions, but a new federation group of labor unions was formed: the PIT - Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores - (Inter-union Assembly of Workers).

After the reestablishment of civil government in 1985 the labor unions started their normal activities. The PIT changed its name to PIT-CNT, as old members of the CNT joined the PIT, and as a kind of homage to the older group.

Flag

The flag of the PIT-CNT is red with a symbol in the canton that recalls the sun in the national flag. The sun has a cogwheel inside it, that is a usual symbol for industry or for work. The acronym of the group's name appear in white letters forming an arc.

Last 22 June 2005, President Tabaré Vázquez visited the seat of the PIT-CNT in Montevideo. During the meeting a flag of the labor union was seen. However this flag had a blue fimbriated acronym instead of the common one. This variant of the flag had appeared before during the commemoration of Worker's Day in the square next to the Congress Palace in Montevideo, last 1 May 2005. The font file is from a different kind than the one in the common flag also.
